LG Electronics and Ncomputing Join Forces

SEOUL, South Korea, and REDWOOD CITY, Calif., June 18, 2009 – Global electronics innovator LG Electronics and NComputing, the world leader in virtual desktops, today announced a strategic partnership to produce a new category of LCD monitors that integrates NComputing’s virtual desktop technology.

Analysis: This does several things:
-- Enables LG to get into the computing business without having to build low-margin PCs
-- Gives LG an edge as a cloud computing takes off and users access computing resources from a range of devices (e.g., smartphones)
-- Gives NComputing a powerful, global partner to sell its virtual desktop technology to businesses worldwide (LG shipped over 15 million monitors last year)
-- Marks the first OEM deal in NComputing's bid to be the technology powering cloud computing

NComputing, UN team to provide workstations in 60 countries

Computing has partnered with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) to provide 500,000 computers to primary and secondary schools in 60 developing countries by 2012.

NComputing, a provider of ultra low-cost computing technology, developed the program jointly with the UNDESA Global Alliance for ICT Development (GAID).

NComputing X300/Virtual Desktops

If your school’s short on both desktop workstations and cash, consider going virtual. “Virtual desktops” allow a single computer to be shared among several workstations, ideally without users even realizing they’re not on individual PCs.
My school library’s online research center and dedicated catalog workgroups went virtual in September 2008 when X300 hardware and software were rolled in, along with some recycled mice, keyboards, and monitors. The X300 kits split each of our Dell Optiplex’s Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz processing power four ways, essentially doubling the amount of workstations in the library while cutting the amount of actual computers in half. While that bargain sounds too good to be true, going virtual wasn’t a shift I was initially very comfortable with, nor was it my call. That came from Howell Public Schools’ Director of Technology, Paul Pominville.
